WEEK THIRTEEN

Facade System
For the facade system I want to design something that allows some sun to filter though so it gives a scattered light effect though out the day!! The western side of the building needs most protection from the sun as there is nothing else to shade that side of the building and on the north eastern side there is the green house that won't work if it is shaded...

I did some research or facade systems and I came across Toyo Ito's facade of Suites Avenue Aparthotelin barcelona..
I thought that it was really effective in the way that it let light though..

I tried to recreate this effect however I thought that if the pattern ran vertically along the side of the building and wrapped over the main exhibition space then it would give me the filtered light effect I was looking for (as the sun would move over the north of the building it would hit the roof and allow some light though...)

I made an example of how it would look using sheet metal.. this clearly more fluid than the actual design would be as it is so thin and easy to bend...

I tried doing it with plastic as well but didn't really work as the plastic was to rigid and didn't move the way I wanted it to...

it seemed to work well with paper as well (it was supported by wire underneath to help it keep its shape...)

The system would need to be attached by a space frame or something similar, this would allow for each curve to placed in the exact right place to ensure that the sun filtered thought at the right angles...

WEEK TWELVE

Main Exhibition Space

SOOO for the main exhibition space I want to use a portioning system that ramps up to the cloud room, thought if i use curves it allows for alcoves for information to be displayed... also if the floor is ramped then people will slowly be able to approach the cloud room, from the partitions i want to create a walkway to the could room, only a few meter so once people get there it feels like they are floating in the clouds, being able to see people moving below and the city in the distance..

The rest of the floor plans are further developed....

WEEK TWELVE

Spatial Arrangement...

Kept working on my floor plans... decided to move the lifts on the left to the outer side of the building... this allow for better movement thought each floor and the lift sharft will not be just sitting in the middle of some rooms....

As you can see from the plans there would be a large space between the lobby and cafe, this allows for the outside of the building to be utilised but the public and people walking by...

Still not sure on how people can access the cloud room or how the facade will work... is it going to attach to the cliff or is it going to be separate???

WEEK TWELVE

Program....

So from my form development I moved onto to spatial arraignment within the environmental education centre...

So starting from ground floor and moving around the building as you would if you were visiting the education centre..

I started with the ground floor, Which i wanted to use as the lobby, it would be more of a place for classes to sort them selves out before moving though the rest of the building..

Above the lobby on the first floor I decided to place office spaces and staff rooms, this allows easy access to the lobby and does not interrupt with the circulation of public though the building...

Above the staff rooms I decided to place the theatre/ presentation room. room would be a room that has a short film that is on loop, so people can enter and exit the room at any time, this prevents people waiting around in the lobby for one class to finish and move on...

People then move into the main exhibition space (via lift or stairs, not to sure yet on how people would move around this space or where the cloud room would be, possibly above the rest of the exhibition space? but how would people get there?

From the exhibition space people would then move to the green house via the lifts at the other end of the exhibition space (the ones they DIDNT come up in). I placed the green house on the level below the exhibion space so people could see down from the exhibion space into the green house... The space also needed to be tall so the trees had room to grow...

People would them move down again into the changing exhibion space and then to the cafe on the ground floor.. where they would exit outside...

The partial secion (if that is what you would call it) shows how the left side of the building would work... the exterior facade will be separate to the floors allowing people to hear and see people on the floors above and below. this would allow people entering the building to hear the fun and laughter from the other levels...

WEEK ELEVEN

FORM DEVELOPMENT

Kept playing around with the form and finally came up with a form that I like and actually work with the vertical circulation that I wanted!! The form also fits well on the cliff allowing sun etc into the building only on one edge...

Also works well into my idea of a building as a cycle (the circulation of it anyway)...

Things to still consider...
 - Shading? It won't work as a glass box... it will be way to hot...
 - Structure.... Glass is not structural :/

WEEK ELEVEN

The Cloud Room
As my exhibition space is about the cycles of the earth I took the idea of a cloud room from Big Architects! except I researched how it would actually work!!

Berndnaut Smilde an artis from Denmark combined science and art to create clouds in a room...

He does this simply by using a smoke machine and controlling the humidity within the room...

To include the cloud room into my design there are a few main things to consider....
  - how people get to the cloud room
  - how the temperature and humidity within the room can be
    controlled
  - what do people do in the room? is it just a room with clouds
    in it?

WEEK ELEVEN

FORM BUILDING EXT

The last few forms I tried didn't seem to work quite how i wanted them to so I went back to my original form from the interim presentation!

The form was supposed to represent the wind! to be honest it looks like sperm :/

The photo is a bit hard to see but I tried rotating the bottom floors on the right (of the model above) and it sort of gave me this warped look about it!!!

The form didn't really fit into the site nicely, I want it to mould to the cliffs and extend out when you exit...
The closer to the cliffs the more sheltered you are there for if the building moulds to the cliff then extends into the site as you move though the building you become more exposed to the elements....

WEEK TEN

Circulation of Building as a Cycle

From the exemplar I decided to do my building as a cycle!!! As the environmental education centre is about the the cycles of the earth i thought that it would be interesting to apply this to the building! To end where you started!

Entry direction and exit direction play a big part in this design! to end where you stared the entry and exit need to be opposite each other so when you exit you can keep walking in the same path to the entry again!!! or just conclude!

Below i tried again to get the vertical circulation working as well as keeping the entry and exit close to each other...

WEEK TEN

Exemplar Building

Big Architects - SSP St Petersburg Pier

The wave is conceived as a strong character on the skyline and waterline of St Petersburg and Tampa Bay. Its characterstic waves and curves lend themselves to an array of activities around and within them; a view point, a pavilion, a band shell and boat pier, a market place etc...
I used this building as an exemplar due to it's vertical circulation! they way they have set out the building is very interesting! Circulation though the building is the same as the water cycle!!!

To fully wrap my head around how this building works I made a mock model!!! turns our it is more complex than i thought it was!!! took a while to figure out the wright angle etc to get it to look similar!

WEEK TEN

Entry to Building

From the narrative i wanted to create an entrance where you could see people experiencing the building from the plaza...

To achieve this i thought that if the building wrapped around its self then as you walk though the front door then you would be able to see people on the opposite side of the build...

Instead of having my building so vertical i thought that it might work better horizontal! like a coil wrapping around itself!

But how would people get from one space to the next? Cant just have stairs because disabled people can not access it!!

decided that it would work and wasn't the effect that I going for!!

WEEK NINE

A CHILDS NARRATIVE...
The excitement of going to a new place always takes over as you approach it. The promise of a fun day ahead adds to this excitement. Walking from the city to the Environmental education centre, though he parkland the Storey Bridge becomes a hugh eye opener! How could anything that big get built?? But as the centre comes into view the over shadowing presence of the bridge is forgotten... Towards the entrance of you begin to feel shelter by the building even though you are not inside.. You get glimpses of people within the building as you move towards the lobby. the threshold between the entry plaza and the lobby gives you an instant feeling of security! of shelter form the elements! Waiting for the teacher you you realise how much you want to push forward into the exhibition rooms(ignoring the corridors that branch off! as you move thought eh exhibits the information and experiments distract you for a minute and then you realise that the building is exposing you to the elements little by little. until you eventually end up in the green house where it is hard to even tell whether you are inside or out!!!!
